At the general meeting a Valentine’s theme was mixed into the club business which provided for an jovial atmosphere.

Attending the meeting was Association of Hawaiian Civic Club president Soulee Stroud and his wife.

Scholarship fair at Leeward Community College 2/18/2012

Two PKHCC recipients, Clarissa Keanui and Charisma Kekaulike, stopped by to say Mahalo. They attend Leeward CC.

Next week the team will be at Leeward CC Waianae extension campus located in Waianae shopping center monday 1/23 from 3-5 pm and at Honolulu CC Dillinham campus wednesday 1/25 from 12 noon to 4.

Aloha and Mahalo to the member’s whom attended. Special thanks to our choir lead by Leohone and the sweet sounds of Jordan, Kapua and Paulina. They serenaded us before and during the meeting. Finally to Loko’olu and the men from Halau Kumana Charter School who performed the Kava ceremony. As the Ka’Lei eggs commercial say “Too Good”

If you are a club member, didn’t attend the meeting or paid your dues, be the first person to name our guest (shown in the head shot) and explain why she was there. One winner will have his or her membership fee waived for 2012. So be quick and send in your guess.

Act 55 – The Public Land Development Corporation

We would like to share this information with our club members. This is an issue we feel may affect the future quality way of life in Hawaii.

The Public Land Development Corporation (PLDC) was created in 2011 through Act 55. The PLDC is mandated to generate funds for the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to enable the DLNR to increase its regulatory enforcement powers. In the process, public lands will be managed more effectively. Pursuant to the wide powers and exemptions found in Act 55, the PLDC has the potential to become the preferred vehicle by which development takes place in the islands. Thus, the PLDC has the unique opportunity to revise how development should/could take place in the Hawaiian islands.

The main purpose of Act 55 is to generate income for the state. Act 55 will change the entire way development happens in the Hawaiian islands. Consequently, the entire construction industry—labor, contractors and developers—the native Hawaiians, and the Hawaii community at-large, will be affected. Our best chance to implement Act 55 successfully is through the cooperative efforts of all stakeholders. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Hawaiian Civic Clubs have pertinent expertise that could significantly shape the administrative rules of the Public Land Development Corporation.

We believe that the administrative rules of the PLDC should:
(1) Honor the Hawaiian culture;
(2) Safeguard traditional and customary rights; and
(3) Move Hawaii towards a sustainable future through pono development.

Prosperous 2012 Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club members.

This is a beginning of a new year and we are eagerly looking forward to better ways keeping everyone updated and informed on Hawaiian issues or related events that will affect our club.

Reminder our first general meeting is January 11 at Queen Emma Summer Palace in Nuuanu at 5:30 pm. We will be mailing out reminder post cards again. On the agenda will be; installation of Executive Offices and Board of Directors, calendar of events being planned, issues concerning the club along with the annual collecting of club dues for this year.

A fine Hawaiian dinner is being catered so if anything come eat, talk story and enjoy each others company. Hope to see you on Wednesday

Scholarship Fair at DHHL Building

Cyr Pakele, Keala Pruet and Thomas Ai represented Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club at a scholarship fair held at Dept of Hawaiian Home Land office in Kapolei. There was approximately 75+ in attendance seeking information about financial aid for their children seeking post high education.

OHA turns attention to tentative land deal
HONOLULU, (Nov. 30, 2011) – The Office of Hawaiian Affairs will hold a series of community meetings as part of a wider strategy to soothe concerns about the offer from the state to settle longstanding ceded-lands claims.
OHA will engage the Hawaiian community in detailed discussions about the tentative deal that, if approved by the Hawai’i Legislature, would give OHA 25 acres of property in Kaka’ako valued at an estimated $200 million.
